There isn’t really a right answer for this question.

Deciding to euthanize your companion animal may be one of the most difficult decisions you ever make for them.

Often, well-loved pets are euthanized to minimize unnecessary suffering. The quality of animals’ lives is defined by their overall physical and mental well-being, not just one aspect of their lives.

The Ohio State University created a “quality of life” chart that may help you to better visualize the general well-being of your pet.

Our goal is to make this process as calm and peaceful as possible.

1. Quiet time together:
   You will have time to be with your pet and say goodbye in a calm space. You may stay with your pet the entire time if you wish.

2. A calming medication:
   Your pet is first given a sedative to help them relax and fall into a deep, comfortable sleep.

3. A peaceful passing:
   Once your pet is fully calm and comfortable or even asleep, a final medication is given that allows them to pass away gently and without pain.

4. Time afterward:
   The veterinarian will confirm your pet has passed away by listening to their heart beats, some pets experience twitches (involuntary muscle movements) even after passing. This is normal and not to be concerned about, they usually last for few minutes after the heart has stopped beating.

   You will be given as much time as you need with your pet.

Absolutely! regardless of your choice of the cremation process, you will be emailed a link to order memorials you wish to have for your pets.

The link will be emailed to you within 1 hour from “Gateway” and expires in 48 hours, so please let us know if you haven’t received it.

Any changes you make for that order has to be communicated with Gateway directly as we have no control on this step. Memorials are shipped by Gateway to our clinic for your pick up.
