Frequently asked questions
-
Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) is a surgical procedure used to stabilize the knee in dogs with cranial cruciate ligament injuries.
The procedure changes the angle of the tibial plateau, reducing the abnormal movement that occurs when the cruciate ligament is damaged. This helps improve knee stability, comfort, and limb function.
-
At River Glen Veterinary Clinic, we have no routine surgical waitlist. Depending on your dog's medical condition and surgical availability, TPLO surgery may be scheduled as early as same week.
Self-referrals are welcome, and we also work with referring veterinarians throughout Canada and the United States.
-
TPLO surgery is generally performed as a day procedure at River Glen Veterinary Clinic. Most suitable patients can return home the same day with pain medication, detailed postoperative instructions, and a recovery plan.
Occasionally, additional monitoring or hospitalization may be recommended based on the patient's individual needs
-
Most dogs require approximately 8–12 weeks of carefully controlled activity following TPLO surgery.
Recovery includes restricted exercise, gradual increases in activity, and postoperative assessments. Follow-up radiographs are typically recommended to evaluate bone healing before unrestricted activity resumes.
Your dog's individual recovery plan will depend on their progress and clinical findings.
-
We work with pet insurance providers to assist with pre-approvals and claims, helping make the process as smooth as possible.
We currently offer direct billing to Trupanion. For other insurance providers, we can assist with the documentation required for reimbursement.
